NBC 5’s Mary Ann Ahern reported that Johnson’s petitions could be challenged on the grounds that nearly 100 pages were photocopies. Chicago law requires original signatures on nominating petitions. Five of the pages were from City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin.

The campaign conceded a few photocopies “might have slipped in” but said it has enough valid signatures to survive. Objections were due Nov. 2, and the Electoral Board hears challenges before the ballot is certified Dec. 17.

The report landed four days before the objection deadline — and the challenge did come, filed Nov. 2 by fellow candidate Willie Wilson’s campaign.

Why it matters

This was the warning shot. The photocopy report turned a routine petition filing into a ballot-access fight, and it previewed the exact grounds — photocopies, Conyears-Ervin pages, validity counts — that the formal objection would later cite.
